No thanks to a nearby lightning strike, the pond’s NBN-supplied modem was completely fried, more fritz than a Mar-a-lago Halloween romp with Pauline, Gina, King Donald and saucy, scantily clad, deeply Xian women.
No worries, you propose. Malware’s mighty NBN will immediately spring into action and make things right.
And indeed they will. They have promised, Scout’s Honour, from the days when that meant something, to send along a fix in the next day or so, and make things right. Or maybe not, who knows?
Ah Malware, you’ve done it again. Why you invented the Optus internet! How lucky is the pond?!
The pond will return, but the precise timing is in the lap of the Malware gods, sadly by which time snaps of those cavorting, deeply Xian women will be a fading memory...
Being on that cockamamie 'tower to roof' compromise on compromise, that was supposed to be just so much better value for money, the estate has a day or two 'off' the NBN every few weeks, for reasons that are never spelled out to us. We are prone to saying, borrowing from an old commercial 'Thank you, Mis-tah Turn-bull'.
ReplyDeleteDP, I've just missed a call... booked & important... due to total sercice outage.
ReplyDeleteThe "provider" one of the only three, has had outages across SA & NSW.
We played phone tag for an hour. Have had to reschedule.
And outage times DO NOT MATCH the fob off bullshit from phone provider. I raised complaint and investigation. Wow! Productive!
If I'm 1 second late to pay bill, they charge a late fee of 33% of my bill plan.
Tried to tell ACMA. They said no, go on line to complain. No I said you need data NOW. And phone calls still are not allowing clear voice, so 3 retries after "outage" "fixed".
I guess Senate Estimates have cans and strings at the ready. Donated by the Proud to be Little No Net Zero Nats!
While we are waiting for "The pond will return, but the precise timing is in the lap of the Malware gods"...

"Writing For The AIs
...
Nov 03, 2025
American Scholar has an article about people who “write for AI”, including Tyler Cowen and Gwern. It’s good that this is getting more attention, because in theory it seems like one of the most influential things a writer could do. In practice, it leaves me feeling mostly muddled and occasionally creeped out.
“Writing for AI” means different things to different people, but seems to center around:
• Helping AIs learn what you know.
• Presenting arguments for your beliefs, in the hopes that AIs come to believe them.
• Helping the AIs model you in enough detail to recreate / simulate you later.
Going through these in order"

"Is Deep Research deep? Is it research?"
by JOHN Q on SEPTEMBER 12, 2025
I’m working on a first draft of a book arguing against pro-natalism (more precisely, that we shouldn’t be concerned about below-replacement fertility). That entails digging into lots of literature with which I’m not very familiar and I’ve started using OpenAI’s Deep Research as a tool.

"The three remaining men - Susssan a dishonarary man - make their way to a Sun Dome, but find that it has been destroyed by The Coal-ition. They eat their last rations and stop to rest the night before heading for another dome. In the middle of the night Little to be Proud Of Pickard begins shouting and firing his gun, then becomes catatonic with his mouth open to the sky, starting to drown. Canavan Simmons recognizes this as a terminal stage of rain fatigue and shoots him. By morning Canavan Simmons can no longer hear anything but the rain and, realizing that he will soon go insane, tells the lieutenant to leave him to commit suicide.
The lieutenant -Ooh! Who is it - continues alone, steadily growing more desperate, until he sees a Sun Dome. He stumbles toward it, nagged by urges to begin drinking the rain, and opens the door to a scene of luxury: freshly prepared sandwiches and hot chocolate, a change of uniform, and a phonograph in mid-song. He blinks for a moment and then sees only the sun, warming him in silence.
And finally agrees to Net Zero on Earth.

"PETN is also becoming more in demand in today’s age of “asymmetrical warfare.” From a recent India Today write up:
PETN is highly coveted for a range of uses, from industrial demolition to military applications—and, more disturbingly, as a weapon in terrorist attacks. Its adaptability allows it to be moulded into plastic explosives, easily concealed within everyday objects…
Objects like pagers:
Israeli intelligence, operating through [a shell corporation in Hungary called B.A.C. Consulting], produced for Hezbollah specially designed pagers containing batteries laced with small quantities of the explosive PETN, which is difficult to detect. The explosives were designed to detonate after a specific encrypted message was sent to them, activating an on-switch in the explosive charge. The actual explosion occurred shortly afterwards either by pager holders pressing two buttons manually with both of their hands to view the encrypted message or through a second activating message.
While Israel gifts golden pagers, the attack is being made into a feature film, and the Western media fawns over the “spectacular” “Bond-like”the fact such an “ingenuous” operation disfigured children is of course ignored:

ReplyDelete"Donald Trump and Joe McCarthy

"Sophie Lee from an online publication called Cultured Magazine asked for a recommendation of “one book that helped you understand the moment we’re living through and a few sentences on why.” The responses are here. They used a brief extract of what I sent them. Below is the full version, based on a post from 2016:
Richard Rovere was a journalist who wrote about politics at the New Yorker magazine for many years. His 1959 book, Senator Joe McCarthy, is a vivid telling of an important moment in American political history by someone who was there at the time.
“He built . . . a coalition of the aggrieved—of men and women not deranged but affronted by various tendencies over the previous two or three decades . . .”
That’s political reporter Richard Rovere in his 1958 classic, “Senator Joe McCarthy.” I hate to draw an analogy between McCarthy and Donald Trump because it seems so obvious . . . but I happened to be reading Rovere’s book back in 2016 and came across so many passages that reminded me of Trump, I had to share.
Here are a few:
...
"We see echoes of this, not merely in Trump’s own statements, but also from his supporters.

ReplyDeleteWell, I don’t know why it never looks right
I’m always feeling I’m in some kind of fight
I'm so scared in case it falls off somewhere
And it shows that I’ve got nothing up there…
Can’t for the life of me
Make it sit right - here I am
Stuck with a mongrel hair-do!
Like a hamster that just had a shampoo
And I'm wondering if I used the right glue
It’s a struggle just to keep it in place
When it’s windy it’s all over my face…
Crowned with a Pekinese
Comes off every night – here I am
Stuck with this mongrel hair-do!
Whoops! Apologies to Stealer's Wheel.
