In which the pond spends a quality Sunday catching up on the lickspittle sycophantic bromancer ...

The servile, pandering front page of the Currish Snail this day reminded the pond of one of its favourite words.

It didn't come by way of the Maoists - even if that usage reminded the pond of the comedy of fanaticism - but from a much earlier reading of The Devil's Dictionary ...

Speaking of lickspittles, and not wishing to further the running lap dog Hansonite agenda of the Currish Snail, the pond still had some leftover, half-baked ruminations by the reptile bromancer ...

With that sort of provocation by the reptile Oz's foreign editor, the pond was immediately reminded of another Ambrose Bierce definition ...

But of course the bromancer knows nothing of conscious comedy - he prefers to be unconscious all the way ...

This is as massively silly as it sounds. Other nations would have done this for Australia, it's just that Australia deemed that it didn't want to deal with any of those other nations ...

And then to turn around and see all this in the most favourable light for the Donald, and for the US-Australian relationship?

Who knows how the extreme vetting will proceed? Who knows what bureaucratic pettifogging might yet erupt? This was known in Tamworth as counting chickens before they fully hatched.

So why wouldn't the word "lickspittle" spring to mind?

It makes innate sense, in much the same way that the bromancer makes pronouncements from on high, with dazzling conviction, and then, when later found out to be wrong, brushes aside the error as a minor matter ...

Well conviction of greatness and superiority of insights has its benefits ... and it encourages the egregious lickspittle to indulge in astonishing excess ...

No serious criticism to be made of Turnbull?

Why this very day, petulant Peta and marauding Miranda the Devine have leapt into the fray in the Sunday Terror and the Sunday HUN and all the other outposts of the single Murdochian brand to ravage Malware, berate and abuse him ...

The mreow in petulant Peta's performance is something to see ...

Speaking of the pillory, there probably needs to be an update for this definition, using bits or bytes or whatever else is to hand ...

Ah well, Malware can afford to pay, so the pond doesn't much mind ... and so it's back to the lickspittle verbiage of the lodger ...

What's the bet the lickspittle lodger harbours a grudge about Obama for daring to call out a fellow climate denialist, his bromancing best denialist buddie?

And there you have it.

The lickspittle has devised a new condition as a way of excusing his servile pandering ... Trump derangement syndrome, as if Trump himself is not a seriously deranged narcissist ...

Never mind all that has happened in the past two weeks - the most egregious being the handing of the keys to Goldman Sachs and the setting up of the conditions for the next world recession - and never mind what is yet to happen in the matter of climate science, though already there's talk of a mass march of scientists on Washington ...

By golly, if that happens, it'll be something to see. Usually they're too busy doing other things to get political ...

Of course there are some people who understand that handing on to future generations a ruined planet is actually worse than killing the firstborn of every family. It used to be an old saw that a farmer should hand on a property in better condition than he found it ...

Instead the lodger offers lickspittle advice about ridiculous moral panic and not losing our heads ...

Well there's another word that would do just as nicely as lickspittle, and it has a poem attached to it ...

We can assume it applies to foreign editors as much as common or garden editors ...

Many versions of Bierce's book can be found littering the intertubes ...the pond's favourite Adelaide academics have a nice edition here ...

And so to a vision the pond much prefers, David Rowe's thought for the weekend, and as usual, more Rowe can be found here ...

  1. Hmm. The Bromancer says: "The fact it [ie the Manus-Nauru regfugee deal] was signed well before the US election, but then announced well after the election, could lead Trump's people to feel they'd been stitched up here."

Well, it may not have been formally announced until after the election, but I suggest it wasn't exactly unknown prior to the election. In his article in the SMH titled "Australia to take Central American refugees as Malcolm Turnbull pledges to do more at Obama summit", Mark Kenny says:

"And that bolstered intake [Australia's increased refugee intake] will now include Central American refugees currently housed in camps in Costa Rica - a pledge described by one observer as Mr Turnbull's "price of entry" to the summit. However, another theory suggests a potential quid pro quo arrangement, which could see the US resettle refugees stuck in Australia's offshore detention centres on Manus Island and Nauru."

But then, that was in the Fairfax Press and the reptiles believe that everything in Fairfax is just lies, I guess.

  2. I think poor Greggy has suffered some sort of short circuit in the brain, brought on by constructing that paragraph about real unreals and unreal reals, and suddenly introducing the unknown into it. But I note that in his discussion of what we might be able to do with the poor buggers on Manus and Nauru, not once did he mention Malaysia.
