Well it wouldn't be a proper Monday without the reptiles having a go at the ABC, and naturally there was the Major Mitchell on hand to offer sage advice … and disappointingly, only one troll on the tweet ...
Naturally the Major was anxious to explain to Guthrie and the ABC how to objectively locate an Order of Lenin medal, and write sensitive respectful copy that avoided any hint of hate speech …
Ah the reptiles, full of hate, fear and loathing …but enough of that, it's on with the Major …
And that, if anyone wanted, is a perfect illustration of the way water will flow off a duck's back and possibly a Major Mitchell's back too …
Why the reptiles just love having the ABC around as a punching bag, and they certainly wouldn't want it sold off, no, no, no, because then it just wouldn't be the same …
… as if no-one's been reading the lizard Oz for the last decade, with all the talk of selling off the ABC, and the IPA hot to trot and so on and so forth ...
As for the ABC and the BBC and programming? The pond does so wish that the Major read his own rag …
The pond doesn't know which planet the Major lives on - possibly he's care of the Black Stump out Woop Woop way …
Yes the reptiles and the Murdochians and the degutted ABC budget mean that serving up a diverse array of programming is now a stretch, and when it comes to things like live sport and high end drama on the ABC, you're likely to see comprehensive coverage of tiddlywinks, and a once a week high end Australian drama every so often ...
As for the rest, it's full-bore, smug, condescending, up himself in a major way Major assessment time, as if he's doing it from anything other than his one-eyed view of the world ...
And there you have it, that troll in the tweet …
Create shows for conservatives and cut make-up … right.
… though the pond might have phrased it a tad more forcefully, along the lines …
Create shows for conservatives … when the ABC is supposed to be balanced … and cut make-up? Yeah right, what fucking planet do you regularly infest? Oh that's right, the Black Stump, out Woop Woop way …
It's quite possible that the Major doesn't realise either the ineffable stupidity, or the sublime comedy, of his proposal to cut make-up, but that's why the pond loves him so.
The pond need a galahs on a Monday to do his Murdochian cockie dance because it's hard to start a new week, and a little light relief is always appreciated …
And so to a Moir cartoon, with Moir's website here …
"Create shows for conservatives"???? Why can't they create shows for themselves? Do they expect creative lefties to do everything for them?
ReplyDeleteAnd there are shows for conservatives; on RN for example there is Tom Switzer and Amanda Vanstone but perhaps conservatives find these shows too 'intellectual' for them?
Yair now, if Guthrie and the ABC wanted to do, for example, a "conservative, makeup-less" version of The Weekly, who in the world, much less in Australia, could conceivably front it ?
DeleteGerard 'Prattling Polonius' Henderson, maybe ? If not, then who ? A bunch of IPA lovelies, perhaps ?
They have shows already but they rate about the same as the test pattern.
DeleteI don't know about Switzer but I listened to Vanstone on the way home a couple of times. About as interesting as a paper cup. The ABC website says "tackles key social, economic and cultural issues in Australian life, challenging assumptions and giving voice to new and seldom-heard commentators" however, the last episode I listened to was very mundane and ended with the sort of anecdote you could pick up in any RSL circa 1970 - an unattributed comment about benefit recipients living the high life at Byron Bay.
They may help reinforce some already held views but you will not find much information or entertainment in the conservative commentariat.
When the classic British comedy "Til Death Do Us Part" first screened back in the 1960s-70s, many viewers, both in the UK and here, laughed along with the racist, narrow-minded and ignorant comments of the main character, working class Tory Alf Garnett (played so well by the late Warren Mitchell). These particular viewers never seemed to understand - even when pointed out to them - that the show was actually critical of Alf and his views, and that he was generally the butt of its jokes.
ReplyDeleteReactionaries are generally a dim lot, so perhaps some repeats of that show's surviving episodes might convince the Major and others of his flock that the ABC is now giving voice to true conservatives? Hell, don't even admit they're reruns - they may not even notice!
Bit like the Trump "base" (and the Turnbull "base" and the Abbott "base") haven't even begun to grasp that the joke is on them ... every inch (2.54cm) of the way.
