In which the pond has to race like a broken clock out of the land of Dame Slap to get to a Pogues' tune ...

The pond is getting mighty tired of this Melba'ing with the reptiles.

The pond did its level best to avoid a farewell with Dame Slap … who likes to be sent to the back of the class and don the Liberal warrior dunce cap?

The pond would much rather have seen the bromancer dance on the head of a pin as he explained the latest set of Donald moves …

The pond approached Dame Slap with the supply of cartoons running low, and so much more action going down in the land of the Donald, and a sense of weary ennui at the relentless Slappian culture wars.

This after all, is the woman who donned a bright red MAGA cap and slipped out onto the streets of New York to celebrate the arrival of the Donald with allegedly exultant natives …

And now she gets to rabbit on with nary a hint of remorse, nary a look in the rear-view mirror …?

John Howard warned about an emerging cultural McCarthyism?

This braying lover of the Donald has the enormous cheek to talk about cultural McCarthyism?

Is it any wonder that the pond is over Dame Slap? Is it any wonder that the pond marked the dame down to the very early morning slot?

How many times can a tired joke about Enid Blyton's land above the faraway tree featuring a barbaric teacher get recycled in a noble cause?

Uh huh, now here's a question. Is The Australian a genuine newspaper, interested in objective reporting, or is it a mere idle propaganda arm of the rabid right?

Okay, it's only a silly and a rhetorical question. Of late it's turned worse than Fox News, with its crusading and its regular carry-ons, but it takes the Dame to bell the cat and confirm the bleeding obvious…

Please allow the pond to foreshadow a line out of the mouth of the Dame ...

"The good fight is left to this newspaper, and committed groups such as the Institute of Public Affairs (of which I'm a director), the Centre for Independent Studies and the Caterist Menzies Research Centre, busy making out like bandits on the taxpayer dime …"

It didn't come out quite like that, but close enough for the Dame to score an IPA cigar (remember, smoking is good for you, or at least for a healthy level of donations to the IPA war chest) ...

Voices mostly from the United States?

What, we should all don a MAGA cap?

The pond doesn't know where it wold be without the cartoonists … because how many times is it possible to swallow yet more bleating about dinkum clean Oz coal, oi, oi, oi, Adani, and the whole damn thing?

Ideas that still matter today?

Like donning a MAGA cap or channelling Lord Monckton?

The pond hesitates to mis-quote the Kinks:

Oh set me free, little reptiles.
All you gotta do is set me free, little reptiles.
You know you can do it if you try,
All you gotta do is make the paywall work
All you gotta do is set the pond free, free,
Free. Set me free,
Oh, set me free
Oh build a big wall
And set the pond free ...

And so to a mournful Pogues ditty, as nominated by a reader and much appreciated by the pond.

Does it say something about the tragic state of the reptiles that the Pogues get more comments than the reptiles? And why not, because even when they're sounding a little down, they're still more fucking fun …

What next? Play some fucking Stooges?

  1. "Play some fucking Stooges"? What a damn fine idea, DP! But which particular tunes would be most appropriate? "Search and Destroy", perhaps? After all, that's the standard Reptile approach to any views that don't fit in with those of the Chairman. Or maybe "Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell" - but then, "Pretty" isn't a word I'd usually associate with any of the Reptiles. No, personally I'd have to go with "No Fun" - because that's the feeling I always associate with the Reptiles. None of them ever appear to have any fun - too busy shouting angrily at clouds - and I've certainly never gotten any from them.

  2. Howard is of course a war criminal. He was also a pathological liar.
His legacy is the chaos now being dramatized all over the Middle East and North Africa.
The book Erasing Iraq The Human Cost of Carnage describes his legacy in Iraq.
Meanwhile none of the psychotic talking heads that infest the IPA etc ever mention the USA as a permanent warfare state as described in many books including The House of War by James Carroll

  3. Gimme Danger if anything...

but... but Jannet... what about your "potential" dream team of Dutton as PM and Michaelia leaving the senate for the reps. Surely you haven't forsaken them?

  4. Speaking, as Dame Snap does, of Jordan B. Peterson reminds me that the Divine one had a marvellous article about the transgressive Deep Thought of our times, which I saw in a free dead-tree Terror. Dorothy may find some amusement if the leaky wall gives it up.

For mine, I browsed a little of his meisterwerk, currently a bestseller on Amazon. With its "all will be well in the garden, there will be growth in the spring" profundities, I think Dorothy would enjoy that immensely, too, given her love of deep philosophers like Chance the Gardener.

    1. For anybody at all interested - including even your goodself, FD - you can read all about it here:

Though frankly, the first paragraph pretty much says it all.
