In which it's a red Thursday for blue reptiles ...

Thursday is the day when the pond would like to be almost anything else than settle down to its herpetological studies ...

There was Time magazine, of all places, doing a hatchet job on Ron DeSanctus, No One Is Talking About What Ron DeSantis Has Actually Done to Florida - suffice to say he's fucked it pretty good, but provided loads of distractions - but then the pond once watched someone fooled by the pea and thimble trick for a straight hour ... and who was the bigger fool, the sucker, or the pond for wasting an hour watching the sucker?

Instead of having fun of the pea and thimble kind, this is what the pond was set to study as its Thursday assignment ...

Dear sweet long absent lord, the bouffant one blathering about hot ai?

At least as some kind of reptile equivalent to a hot air balloon or blimp, he knows what he's talking about - and he even made it on to the front page of the tree killer edition, if you squint a little ...

And who is that Lorraine Finlay, helping out the reptiles in their daily bashing of uppity, difficult tricky blacks?

Yes, it's a deeply simplistic message, worthy of a simpleton, and the pond was glad it excerpted only a small portion ...

The pond quickly moved on to see what was below the fold, and was equally disappointed ...

Sheesh. the reptiles rolled out Jack the Insider last night, and his heresy about Sweden failed to move the pond ... Killer Creighton simply isn't for turning ...

And what are the reptiles doing publishing comrade Dan? Won't the sky fall in?

The pond did enjoy Shireen Morris, if only because she got stuck into the craven Craven, so a few excerpts about the voice won't hurt ...

What a delicious serve ...

Can the pond have another? It would be too much to expect a mention of that enormously silly Human Rights Commissioner - perhaps another day? - but giving the craven Craven a hard time will do for the moment ...

But after the fun, what then? And that's when the pond made the fatal mistake of turning to a fresh voice, a chance to sample young 'un thinking, or if you will, the voice of vulgar youff out and about in the lizard Oz ...

Oh dear, the poor thing, having a go at the basket weavers in Balmain, but at least she succeeded where it mattered in the next gobbet ...

How kind of the reptiles to bless her with a gigantic snap. It's all about brand recognition, and perhaps she'd be better of dancing on TikTok, but you must take your branding where you can find it ... and that's a truly big snap ...

As for the message ...

Here's a tip for young 'un Freya. While you carry on about TikTok, the reptiles are featuring a snap of little Johnny in your piece, and no one cares, not those old enough to remember and forget, and those too young to remember the war years ...

And about that message ...

Our serious content needs to be emotive?

What, like Ron DeSanctus? As in the United States?

Nah, doing a man in a funny hat (badly) is beyond the valley of the tragic. But "Young people value authenticity and a sense of being real" is a step beyond that ...it's really tired ...

And then came the worst crime of all ...a snap of the parrot in the final gobbet ... and not just a normal-sized snap, but a full-blown Freya style snap ...

What the fuck? The message the pond came away with is that young Freya is happy to be associated with the likes of a chortling parrot, aged and irrelevant... not exactly the branding or the messaging that the pond had expected.

In all, the pond felt underweight and underdone, and not having delivered on its assignment, so for once the pond dared to go there ...

The pond realises it will be too much for some, but the sense of schadenfreude was both delicious and irresistible ...

Fast forward, and there was Gladys, and there were many other things, but the pond is here just for the schadenfreude, and how rich is the serve ...

... and after that howling and wailing and gnashing of teeth, petulant Peta wandered down the road with barking mad Victorian loons ...

What's wrong with the Libs? Well they have all these barking mad loons in their midst, urged on by barking mad dinosaurs of the onion munching and petulant Peta kind, and all the rest lurking on Sky after dark and imagining their delusional notions of reality can be confused and conflated with the world ...

You have to head off elsewhere to see how weird that Deeming is, and how she keeps on being deemed problematic ...

She couldn't help herself ...

What to do, what to say?

“That’s what I wanted all along. I wanted it to be condemned, and she’s done that,” Pesutto said on Monday. “It would be different if there were no concessions from Moira.”
Hours later, Deeming took to Twitter to deny she had condemned either woman.
Deeming told Jones in a tweet: “Don’t worry, I never condemned you, or KD [Katherine Deves] or KJ [Keen].”
During a media blitz on Tuesday morning, Pesutto said there would be consequences if Deeming did not honour the agreement made in the party room.
“Moira is not off to a good start,” he told ABC TV. “The party room will be very, very seriously concerned if Moira doesn’t prove herself by faithfully observing what we agreed to.
“It’s entirely in Moira’s hands and it concerns me, it absolutely does, that those tweets appear to be contradictory, but I can tell you Moira won’t be able to re-enter the party room if she’s going to be speaking and acting inconsistently with what the party room agreed.”

And that's when she went into her sob story ...

But enough of narcissistic attention seeking ... the pond must get back to the sobbing petulant Peta ... and sure enough, take note young 'un Freya, there's a snap of little Johnny ...

Completely clueless, but at that point the mere mention of Ming the merciless led the reptiles to produce a gigantic snap of the man, Freya size, but it felt wrong to the pond, an irrelevance, a nostalgia for the 1950s that would probably have sent Freya into a TikToking frenzy ... so the pond cut it down to size ...

The reptiles should have run a snap featuring something inspirational, uplifting, elevating ...

Oh okay the pond was only ever going to run with a petulant Peta piece if it could have some lolz ... and so to a final short gobbet, a closing howl of Ginsbergian pain ...

Climate is a first world concern? And now they're putting all their chips on showing how cruel they can be to difficult, tricky,  uppity blacks?

But then conservatives have always inclined to be cruel, as shown by a country which has managed 130 mass shootings in three months, better than one a day ... and done sfa to stem the blood ...

No cartoonist can summarise the madness, though to give them credit they tried ...

Yes, but how could the immortal Rowe possibly beat this sort of image?

Weird shit and Colbert also struggled to make sense of this sort of nonsense ...

"Well, we homeschool her," Burchett said in response. While answering a separate question about how to quell school shootings, he also said "we're not gonna fix it."

"I don't see any real role that we could do other than mess things up, honestly, because of the situation," Burchett added, commenting about how people can 3D print guns now. "Criminals are gonna be criminals. And my daddy fought in the Second World War, fought in the Pacific, fought the Japanese, and he told me, 'Buddy, if somebody wants to take you out, and doesn't mind losing their life, there's not a whole heck of a lot you can do about it.'"

Uh huh ...Colbert Goes Off on GOP Rep. Who Compared Schools to WWII

Colbert went on to accuse Republicans in Congress of being “desperate” to talk about “anything else.” And in particular, he highlighted the recent comments from Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN), who declared that “we’re not gonna fix it” because “criminals are gonna be criminals.”

“I suppose as a lawmaker he could, I don’t know, make a law, but that sounds like a lot of work,” Colbert replied. “Despair is so much more efficient.”

And when it came to Burchett’s analogy between school shootings and his father’s experience in the Second World War, Colbert said, “Counterpoint: Elementary school is not supposed to be like World War II.”

For those who missed it ...

  2. Hi Dorothy,

How do you manage to land the gig of Human Rights Commissioner?

    1. An excellent reminder, BF, of how the IPA managed to capture the post ...

...She later appeared in an IPA ad attacking the Indigenous voice to parliament proposal, where she described it as “patronising” and “a form of political segregation” because it implied that Indigenous Australians are “only allowed to play a certain prescribed role in the Australian democracy”. Finlay also lent her name and comments to an IPA media release on the issue.

In a chapter in the 2012 Samuel Griffith Society’s Upholding the Australian Constitution paper, titled Indigenous Recognition: Some Issues, Finlay wrote of the “common pattern” of public discussions about Indigenous issues becoming “all too frequently constrained by political correctness and stifled by cries of racism that are aimed at anybody who does not uncritically accept whatever proposition is being put forward.”

Finlay was also the co-author of a submission to the 2018 Ruddock religious freedoms inquiry which argued religious freedoms were not being given enough weight in equality debates.

“In our view, there is presently an unjustifiable imbalance between religious freedoms and anti-discrimination laws, with the balance weighted in favour of the latter. All too often, religious freedom in Australia is treated as a ‘secondary’ right that is not given equal weight with other human rights, in particular equality rights.”

Also in 2018, Finlay, in an article for the Spectator, wrote of the “significant legal and practical problems” with affirmative consent laws, which shifts from a “no means no” standard of consent, to one where consent before sexual acts must be actively sought and communicated ...

And so on and on, consorting with Bettina, stoked up by the Stoker, and Cashing in ...

A nasty piece of work, appointed in a nasty way ...

    2. By a nasty man who nonetheless was elected Federal Libs leader and whose party was voted into power by we the people. Bring on sortition, it couldn't be any worse.

And here's a very good mate of his:

  3. Well, that was a truly entertaining start to the day - thanks Pond. It must be News Corp’s girls day, with Shireen, Lorraine, Freya and Peta. And what a contrast, Shireen dishing it out, double scoops all round, followed by complete slop from Lorraine, Freya and Peta. I think this is what passes for balance from the reptiles. As always, the Liberals and reptiles are in a parallel universe - completely blind to their failures of policy, and always blaming the messaging. I mean you could hardly fault News Corp on messaging - wall to wall propaganda - yet despite News Corp being the communications arm of the Coalition, News keeps blaming the Coalition for poor messaging. My deep analysis suggests that the heart of the problem is that News is unhappy with what Coalition MPs and operatives say - too conciliatory, too woke - but criticism of such would reveal a deeply divided conservative force; so it is all praise for the Coalition pre-election, and civil war after; then repeat at the next election. Apart from non-thinkers who may be swayed by Freya’s How to Win Using Tik-Tok strategy, the rest of Australia appears to have tired of the propaganda.

The Voice is the only News story in town these days, so despite Greg Craven doing a backflip on his own contribution to the referendum wording, the non-elephant in the room is the Coalition policy. Clearly they oppose it, for increasingly obscure reasons, yet what do they propose alternatively? They have form on (not) closing the gap for women in parliament, (not) acting on climate change, (not) acting on robodebt, etcetera, so once again we are left staring at a void, a non-elephant if you like. The US solution on race relations - enslave, discriminate and marginalise, then do nothing - hasn’t exactly worked, yet here is the Coalition, heading straight down the same path. AG.

    1. It's sorta what one expects when a whole bunch of wingnut clans claim to be marching together but insisting that their particular flag must have prominence. The 'right wing' is a real grab bag of different and opposing identity politicians, isn't it ?

    2. Not to worry, AG, a war with Mexico will give the reptiles a chance to do a William Randolph Hearst and the pond can dust off its Hearst Castle T-shirt, all green with very vulgar, very large coat of arms ...

      https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/trump-asks-advisers-battle-plans-000000835.html

“‘Attacking Mexico,’ or whatever you’d like to call it, is something that President Trump has said he wants ‘battle plans’ drawn for,” says one of the sources. “He’s complained about missed opportunities of his first term, and there are a lot of people around him who want fewer missed opportunities in a second Trump presidency.”

Trump lieutenants have briefed him on several options that include unilateral military strikes and troop deployments on a sovereign U.S. partner and neighbor, the sources say. One such proposal that Trump has been briefed on this year is an October white paper from the Center for Renewing America, an increasingly influential think tank staffed largely by Trumpist wonks, MAGA loyalists, and veterans of his administration.

How soon before the bromancer is called to Washington to arrange battle plans? How soon before News Corp goes on a war footing? Distractions, there must always be distractions, and if a war is what it takes ...

In a nod to Mexico’s status as a sovereign nation, the paper calls on the U.S. to “conduct specific military operations to destroy the cartels and enlist the Mexican government in joint operations to target cartel-networked infrastructure, including affiliated factions and enablers with direct action.”

However, that “enlistment” of the Mexican government comes with a massive caveat: “It is vital that Mexico not be led to believe that they have veto power to prevent the US from taking the actions necessary to secure its borders and people,” the paper reads.

The document cautions about the “risks” of ongoing international wars, but it takes very little off the table in terms of military action. “The goal is to crush cartel networks with full military force in as rapid a fashion as possible. This means expanding the role beyond Special Forces, targeted strikes, and intelligence operations to include elements of the Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard,” it recommends, in a chapter presumptuously labeled, “Tier Four: Victory Phase.”

    3. So, something other than The Voice to look forward to. But again - probably all talk. At least Putin puts his guns where his troops are, and if we keep poking out our tongues at Xi, we might get the same treatment. Anyway, with the continuing civil war between citizens and loonies on the US domestic front, they don't need furriners for a good ole shoot-out.

  4. Dorothy - while some of us might think the Thursday Woman from Wycheproof tends to be a non-event, when you see a part-cut gem like her contribution for this day - we are pleased that you choose to share it with us. Particularly when it gives you opportunity to re-run the screen shot of her on Saturday night.

Even more so when she fronts with the current Human Rights Commissioner. Sooo good to have an HRC who is utterly above any kind of partisan politics, unlike that difficult predecessor. It is also inspiring to see how Commissioner Finlay is growing in the job, so justifying the circumstances of her appointment.

    3. Dorothy, I think we are quietly confident that the metaphoric pond (as distinct from the metonymous pond) is of sufficient depth to cover the famous Mount Wycheproof - all 42 metres elevation - and all who have ever been associated with it. Crickets caught up in such a deluge should be able to swim to the nearest shore.

  5. I seem to recall that many commentators at The Australian have railed against social media, yet here is Freya Leach suggesting using it to show young people that the Liberals have the quality of being truthful and correct. However, she's gone astray with her example as the Canberra Times had an article by Daniella White in 2020 which headlined: "Opposition MLA Mark Parton has been reprimanded by Speaker Joy Burch over TikTok videos suggesting she was " destroying democracy".

Apparently Ms Leach also missed USA's former president, Barack Obama, stating Rupert Murdoch fuelled the polarisation of society [https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/mar/29/rupert-murdoch-has-fuelled-polarisation-of-society-barack-obama-says], which probably explains more about why many young people are turned off the Liberals and why the Liberal candidate for Balmain only received 18.97% of first preference votes compared with Labor's 37.30% and the Greens' 40,68%. Clearly her article is a howl of pain!

    2. By golly Anon, that one came straight from the nation's capital ...

      https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/6815942/destroying-democracy-parton-suspended-from-assembly-over-tiktok-videos/

Opposition MLA Mark Parton has been reprimanded by Speaker Joy Burch over TikTok videos suggesting she was "destroying democracy".

Mr Parton agreed to withdraw the comments, but was kicked out of the Legislative Assembly for three hours on Thursday after refusing to remove a video.

Ms Burch emailed members on Tuesday reminding them they must get approval to take photos or video within the Assembly, and any images must not be used for electioneering.

It was in reference to one of Mr Parton's TikTok videos which filmed a portrait of former Labor chief minister Jon Stanhope located inside the ACT Legislative Assembly.

Ms Burch said he used the video to amplify his comments that Mr Stanhope supported the Liberals' election pledge to plant one million trees.

After receiving Ms Burch's email, Mr Parton then posted another TikTok video which questioned the speaker's impartiality and suggested she was "opposed to democracy", according to the speaker.

"In my view using the photographs of the assembly facilities to promote a Liberal party election policy is clearly in breach of [Assembly guidelines]," Ms Burch told the Assembly on Thursday.

"I would remind members there is an election in October this year and there may be over 100 candidates seeking to be elected to this place.

"None of those candidates will be able to use the Assembly facilities to further their election campaign."

Mr Parton agreed to remove the video that was filmed inside the Assembly. However he initially refused to remove the second video titled "don't destroy democracy".

But by Thursday afternoon, Mr Parton said he would remove the video by the end of the day.

"We've made the decision that there are much more important things to be spending time on," he said.

For some reason, the pond was reminded of the incessant feuding on Tamworth City Council...but it does seem that this Parton is partial to spending a lot of time on TikTok drivel ... no doubt an inspiration to 19% (rounded up to make it look good) Freya ...
