Nuking the country to save the planet - a special late arvo reptile bulletin ...

The pond tends to overlook the valiant worker bees always beavering away in the hive mind, offering up little snippets ... little EXCLUSIVES that are briefly seen, then vanish ...

The pond is easily swayed and distracted. by the reptile megastars ... the "Neds", the bros,  but the busy bees are setting the scene for the epic nuking of the country ...

Sometimes it gets awkward ...

But as the mighty Dan Quayle once said, the reptiles will move forward, they will move upward, and yes, they will move onward, and they will nuke the country, come hell or high water ...

By golly that's a weird bit of art work ... it almost looks as if he's steaming ...

Naturally with the reptiles setting the agenda, the ABC has fallen into line and the cardigan wearers are now also obsessed with nuking the country ...

Naming names? Strange, the reptiles didn't go there, just kept the feel good vibe going ...

Meanwhile, the ABC was getting down to naming names and suggesting actual sites ...

The reptiles ignored any saucy doubts and fears and sailed on ...

The pond decided there was only one more cut and paste in the locker ...

The cardigan wearers went on and on, but it was time for a final surge from the reptiles ...

Yep, nuking the country to get to a target Captain Spud and his troops don't believe in, while they still argue over whether there needs to be an actual figure. And as for the figures for nuking the country, go figure. It'll all become clear in time ...

Naturally the pond wanted more, and this was also on offer ...

Please allow the pond to introduce your reptile host ...

She will guide you through the thorny thickets, but relax there'll be a few snaps of splendid kit, or plants if you will ...

That talk of divided experts didn't sit well with the pond. Having been trained by the reptiles, the pond can't stand any both siderist jibber jabber or want to entertain any saucy doubts and fears.

Bring on the kit ...

Once upon a time it would have been splendid shots of coal stations, but no more ...

He doesn't think anyone believes?

Outrageous and the pond instantly regretted wasting the immortal Rowe this morning, featuring a couple of true believers ...

As usual, the devil is in the detail ...

Unfortunately Rhiannon was inclined to be short as a guide ...

The pond had to turn back to the cardigan wearers for a final word, knowing that the country was safe in the hands of a man with Little to be Proud of ... while there was scurrilous talk of click bait, as if the reptiles would ever treat the nuking of the country as a cheap gimmick to keep the angertainment machine churning ...

And with that the pond turned to a cartoon to wrap things up.

It doesn't have much to do with the matter at hand, especially if you're a reptile for nuking ...

  1. Well, that’s ended any arguments - we’re going nuclear. After all, what more do we need than an endorsement from a former cosmetic surgeon turned hotelier, with a fascinating history - https://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-08-09/doctor-slammed-by-coroner-examining-mother27s-death/4877050

  2. But we've also got Ted O'Brien and David Littleproud who seem to know a lot about it, and Falinski and Allen, losers from 2022, as well. Add Spud, and no doubt, the numbers are there.

    It has a lot going for it - dovetailing into the Aukus Nuclear Subs programs - also experimental, uncosted, unscheduled - it all lines up. Not to mention cross technology options - plugging parked subs into the grid to feed nuclear power back in. Yep - this is a goer. Now - big or small - where to put them? Obviously it would be good if they could go in Labor / Greens / Teal electorates, and hopefully well beyond the exclusion zone to Liberal electorates (just in case, you know). AG.

    1. "The switch to EVs is significant, because it causes consumers to think on a near daily basis how and where they will charge the electric vehicles, and at what cost. It makes them focus on their options for solar, and storage, and smart software, and whether they are getting a fair deal from the current market that is now so focused on big centralised power. The Coalition wants to throw that transition into reverse."

  3. Hi Dorothy,

    The intertubes are notorious for leading people down a rabbit hole but recently I started out with a mild inquiry on the viability of SMR’s and eventually found myself watching one of the worst movies ever made.

    I started with the reasonable question of how recyclable SMR’s could be. That led me here;

    https://news.stanford.edu/2022/05/30/small-modular-reactors-produce-high-levels-nuclear-waste/

    Basically SMR’s would create proportionately more radioactive waste than traditional nuclear power plants because there would be substantially higher levels of Neutron Leakage. The reactor core might only be the size of a wheelie bin but the shielding, cooling, pressuriser, steam generator and reactor vessel would be much larger. All of this extra stuff would be irradiated at a higher rate in a SMR.

    This got me thinking about dealing with radioactive waste in particular high level waste. There is an adage in the “Nuclear Industry” that you can walk away from Radiation but not Contamination. In other words if you breathe in or ingest a radioactive emitter you are fucked.

    Strangely I then found myself looking at the wrecks of the WW1 German Fleet at Scapa Flow and the salvage of non-irradiated steel;

    http://www.discoverdiving.im/dive-blog/why-was-scrap-metal-from-scapa-flow-so-important

    Steel production needs a lot of air/oxygen and by the mid 1960’s after numerous atmospheric atomic tests their was quite a lot of radioactive Cobalt-60 in the atmosphere, which meant all steel produced after WW2 was a little bit more radioactive;

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-background_steel

    So if all our steel is now slightly more radioactive due to the Atmospheric Nuclear tests in the 50’s and 60’s how much more radioactive are we just like steel need air too;

    https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/radiation/fallout-pdf

    If you look at Figure 2. A map of the primary atmospheric nuclear weapon test sites you will notice that the US bombed the shit out of the Marshall Islands. The worst example being the Castle Bravo test of a thermonuclear weapon at Bikini Atoll in 1954 which detonated with three times the power expected and led to unprecedented levels of fallout.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Bravo

    Fortunately for Australia the prevailing winds weren’t blowing towards us.

    However when the US were conducting Nuclear Tests in Nevada being downwind was not advisable. This led me here;

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2002/mar/01/research.medicalscience

    Which eventually brought me to the “epic” film about Genghis Khan “The Conqueror” with the brilliant casting of John Wayne as Temujin (Genghis Khan). Unfortunately for the crew they were downwind of nuclear testing nearby which may account for a very high cancer rate for them later in life.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Conqueror_(1956_film)

    So eventually I arrived here;

    1. Wow, DW, that's a helluva rabbit hole, but luckily it was just the trailer ...

    2. Wow, DW - great excursion into the internet there, thank you. No doubt Keith Pitt - one of the several coalition spokesbots for 'nuclear' has done similar, having a degree in engineering and all; just seems that Daisy did not give him time on ADH to fill out such detail.

    3. Very comprehensive indeed, DW, thank you.

      Genghis (or Chinggis) Kahn incidentally is his later life title, roughly meaning 'ruler of the world' apparently.

    4. Ah but the question is, Chad, would he have been able to "fill out such detail" if she had given him an aeon of time.

  4. “Welcome to the nuclear zone.” the sign to Gippsland will read. Nationals MP for Gippsland, Darren Chester, is in favour if it benefits Gippsland, but perhaps he’s unhappy with the current tourism slogan for Gippsland: “Gipps Wonder Land; all kinds of Wonder”. Scrap the video of people enjoying nature. Under the Coalition, there’ll be a new, thrilling slogan: “Gipps Nuclear Land”; all kinds of Nuclear”. Perhaps, one day, tours of nuclear reactors and nuclear waste dumps could be on offer, like they do with volcanoes.

  5. Great viewing DW. I get the subplot - Spud Wayne will lead the Liberal Party to a Titanic victory - and we will all die early from radiation poisoning. Hmmm - what has Albo got to offer? AG.

  6. Never have I seen a stupidly slippery slope INSANE political WEDGE be so effective! And so reckless in soooo many levels.

    Quiggin "show me your plan"
    ABC (grrrr false balance) Sites! Even the Nats are avoiding sites. And saying "carbon free". No cement needed.
    Dumtton, shock jocks etc etc. The hammers are all put away.
    Teh Oz. Nothing needs to be said here. No need of nuclear disaster, just see the Sampson plan, Vlad the impaler, and mango musselini's buddy in the hermit kingdom! Grrrrrrrrr!!!

    Just to add to DiddyWrote's rabbit hole. Bushfires. And a crash of transport of waste.
    "On the Risk of an Accidental or Unauthorized Nuclear Detonation"
    Rand... "The unauthorized detonation of a nuclear weapon is possible as a result of technical malfunction, human error, or a more deliberate human act, such as sabotage" or digital virus, disgruntled or manic corporal, etc.

    Amnesia. In the 1980s, academic critics (such as Jim Falk) discussed the "deadly connection" between uranium mining, nuclear reactors and nuclear weapons, linking Australia's nuclear policy to nuclear proliferation and the "plutonium economy".[11] ... "The movement suffered a setback in 1983 when the newly elected Labor Government failed to implement its stated policy of stopping uranium mining." .... "The 1986 Palm Sunday anti-nuclear rallies drew 250,000 people. In Melbourne, the seamen's union boycotted the arrival of foreign nuclear warships.[39]" ... Prime Minister Julia Gillard's motion to remove a party ban on uranium sales to India was narrowly supported 206 votes to 185. Long-time anti-nuclear campaigner Peter Garrett MP spoke against the motion.[67]" ... " Anti-nuclear movement in Australia. Wikipedia

    It doesn't need to happen here. As DiddyWrote... "Fortunately for Australia the prevailing winds weren’t blowing towards us."

    This wind is. Here is a harbinger for the wind of religious loons in the good ol maga-ness. To wit, today...
    "A must-pass government funding package will expand gun rights for an unlikely group: veterans deemed mentally incompetent to manage their own affairs
    "Though the rider was primarily backed by Republicans, six House Democrats voted in favor of it, according to Roll Call:"
