ReplyDeleteIt has a lot going for it - dovetailing into the Aukus Nuclear Subs programs - also experimental, uncosted, unscheduled - it all lines up. Not to mention cross technology options - plugging parked subs into the grid to feed nuclear power back in. Yep - this is a goer. Now - big or small - where to put them? Obviously it would be good if they could go in Labor / Greens / Teal electorates, and hopefully well beyond the exclusion zone to Liberal electorates (just in case, you know). AG.

ReplyDeleteThe intertubes are notorious for leading people down a rabbit hole but recently I started out with a mild inquiry on the viability of SMR’s and eventually found myself watching one of the worst movies ever made.
I started with the reasonable question of how recyclable SMR’s could be. That led me here;

Basically SMR’s would create proportionately more radioactive waste than traditional nuclear power plants because there would be substantially higher levels of Neutron Leakage. The reactor core might only be the size of a wheelie bin but the shielding, cooling, pressuriser, steam generator and reactor vessel would be much larger. All of this extra stuff would be irradiated at a higher rate in a SMR.
This got me thinking about dealing with radioactive waste in particular high level waste. There is an adage in the “Nuclear Industry” that you can walk away from Radiation but not Contamination. In other words if you breathe in or ingest a radioactive emitter you are fucked.
Strangely I then found myself looking at the wrecks of the WW1 German Fleet at Scapa Flow and the salvage of non-irradiated steel;

Steel production needs a lot of air/oxygen and by the mid 1960’s after numerous atmospheric atomic tests their was quite a lot of radioactive Cobalt-60 in the atmosphere, which meant all steel produced after WW2 was a little bit more radioactive;

So if all our steel is now slightly more radioactive due to the Atmospheric Nuclear tests in the 50’s and 60’s how much more radioactive are we just like steel need air too;

If you look at Figure 2. A map of the primary atmospheric nuclear weapon test sites you will notice that the US bombed the shit out of the Marshall Islands. The worst example being the Castle Bravo test of a thermonuclear weapon at Bikini Atoll in 1954 which detonated with three times the power expected and led to unprecedented levels of fallout.

Nationals MP for Gippsland, Darren Chester, is in favour if it benefits Gippsland, but perhaps he’s unhappy with the current tourism slogan for Gippsland: “Gipps Wonder Land; all kinds of Wonder”. Scrap the video of people enjoying nature. Under the Coalition, there’ll be a new, thrilling slogan: “Gipps Nuclear Land”; all kinds of Nuclear”. Perhaps, one day, tours of nuclear reactors and nuclear waste dumps could be on offer, like they do with volcanoes.
