As the reptiles gently weep and do their best to cope ...

(Above: and more Rowe here).

The pond was deeply alarmed at the series of catastrophes rumbling through the cosmos of late ... there was the matter of Harper, and the possibility of Jolly Joe heading off to Washington to teach the Americans how to do budgets, and then there was the strange spectacle offered by that power couple doing their very own telenovela ...

Of course the Canadians and the Americans and the power couple can take care of themselves, but what of the fragile mental state of the reptiles, lounging on their hot rock? How would they cope with all these changes? Would they be able to adapt and survive?

Never fear, there's a reason reptiles have lingered so long in the world ...

Dame Slap, for example, returns to ask a penetrating question ...

And as for the power couple, gone are the days of celebration ...

Instead the reptiles have felt the need to heave a a despairing editorial off their chest ...

Indeed, indeed. Does this explain why the poodle and the former captain are far removed from most Australians' values, and the reptiles along with them?

Never mind, because one grump has stayed true and resolute:

Of course there's an irony in this ...

(And more at the IPA here, but they'll DDoS check you before they let you in).

But the Bolter is too thick and self-obsessed to do irony well... especially because, as a former Labor staffer, he should be treated as a pariah and an alien and sent down into the outer rings of hell ...

And so to the wretched Canadians ...

Ah, the bromancer, always ready to dance to the new tunes blowing in the wind ...

Dance, bromancer, dance ...

Yes, the world order of Tony Abbott has come to an end, long live the new world order ...

Oh wait, hang on, hang on, there's just time to shed a few tears, and perhaps sing a few verses along with Streisand of Memories ...

Ah well, he did his best to adjust to the changes, but in the end the bromancer couldn't resist yearning for the robust, stout-hearted Asian values he loves so well ... you know, like Malaysia and the odd squillion in a handy nearby bank ... and Vietnam ... and the one party state of China ... and perhaps best of all, the innocence of the Japanese when it comes to war crimes ...

Or some such thing. The lasting, lingering thing that sticks in the pond's mind is that the reptiles are having very hard time coping and adjusting.

All those articles on climate science, all that celebration of coal, all the worshipping and the bromancing of the Abbott years, all the lionising of the power couple, all of Jolly Joe's best work, and for what ...

There's nothing left, perhaps, than to do a Donald Friend and head off to live in Bali ...

But as the going gets tough, the reptiles are sure to get tough, and we can still look forward to the next treatise on the vital importance of coal to the wooorrrrllldddd ...

Chris Kenny Becomes First Person Deservedly Sent To Nauru

“It’s a terrific decision editorially speaking,” claimed one insider. “Like all Australian media we’ve been trying for about eighteen months to get a journalist into Nauru, and here we are now having an almost-journalist there.

“It was a hard task, too. You know, Nauru charges an exorbitant non-refundable amount to even apply for a visa. Once that’s paid they can just bat you away all the same. Who knows how Chris was able to get in there. Maybe it was his persistence, maybe his tenacity, maybe it was that he’s the former chief of staff of the Australian Prime Minister - it could be anything.

“It’s great for him, too. Put him in a room of disadvantaged, downtrodden people and he’s like a kid in a candy shop. We were half expecting him to show up in a pith helmet ready to ‘bring civilisation’.

    1. Good pick up, Anon.

“It takes everyone a few days to adapt to being here. It’s a very difficult and tense situation. Some are escaping war, some fleeing famine, Mr. Kenny writes for The Australian. They all have tragic and heartbreaking stories that you wouldn’t wish upon anyone.

“You see it when you see pictures drawn by the people detained here. It breaks your heart, really. You feel the horror in their lives. I get the same feeling when I read Mr Kenny’s articles. I just sit there shaking my head wondering who hurt him and wishing I could do something to make it better.”

  2. Sooner or later...out of a sense of preservation if not logic or reason..those in a position of influence at "Conservative HQ." are going to wake up to the reality that their "best men for the job" have been making a complete fuck-up of it all !

  3. Did Sheridan actually use "muscular" three times in that piece? My feminist-historian senses are tingling ... and they're also deeply, deeply disturbed :)
