It's like the subsidised meals you get at clubs knowing it comes from the blood of losers and their victim families.

As for that mysterious unexplained header, it was a place holder because temporarily blogger introduced the need to fill in a field - the header - before you could save any text. The pond forgot to replace the place holder but strangely that field requirement seems to have disappeared today. Never mind, the header summarises the mood, so it can stand, but apologies to anyone who wondered what on earth it might have meant.

And thanks Stan for the cookies tip. We might in due course run a piece on evading all the paywalls ....!dorothy parkerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00816807935021738560noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462488453822156883.post-51760069621289610662013-07-08T22:12:33.172+10:002013-07-08T22:12:33.172+10:00Is it Fairdoch or Murdfax? This weekend I encountered the Liberal candidate for the seat of Sydney, who waxed lyrical about the newly approved casino, arguing that the jobs thus created would be good for the state and the economy. So what we want is an economy dependent of gambling? For the foreseeable future. All nicely locked in, eh! It long ago lost the courage it had when it published the Pentagon Papers. Do yourself a favour and sign up to William Bowles' website below if you hanker still for news about the USA, but without the bias. Here is a sample from a journalist who dislikes David Brooks as much as you do but is willing to give credit where it is due, and suits his argument.

http://williambowles.info/2013/07/06/can-the-nyt-call-a-coup-a-coup-by-peter-hart/

I am sure you wouldlike Medialens too.

http://www.medialens.org/Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462488453822156883.post-22827406096815006232013-07-08T11:55:31.171+10:002013-07-08T11:55:31.171+10:00I wonder if Paul Sheehan knows about the deal Crow...I wonder if Paul Sheehan knows about the deal Crown has done with a Sri Lankan developer to build a casino/hotel/retail centre in Colombo to attract Indian and Chinese high rollers? Millions and millions of dollars in tax exemptions. Now that could be a place he could visit, and never have to realise that he's in Sri Lanka. Just like the Singaporean monstrosity really, or Barrangaroo. And they don't have to travel for anywhere near as long as they do to get to Sydney.Russnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462488453822156883.post-48254882682097895142013-07-08T10:31:07.049+10:002013-07-08T10:31:07.049+10:00I have a question why would any society support a ...I have a question why would any society support a casino. What value does it give to a community we have all these economists trying to figure out productivity. would it be possible to find some aspect of gambling that adds to having a cohesive and productive civil society because I cannot see what can be measured to add productivity and improve our standard of living better by gambling on a preset outcome.
What a waste to see such wealth being supported by governments and these inherited wealthy lay about good for nothings like Packer building monuments to their wealth.
