Written by Katherine Murphy and Paul Karp, the article contained the following paragraph:<br />"<i>Cash’s decision to withdraw her comments followed 24 hours of political brawling about the extraordinary inference the jobs and innovation minister made on Wednesday</i>."<br /><br />Now apart from the usual reservations about single sentence paragraphs, it was the meaning given to 'inference' that was disturbing. 'Inference' actually means "<b>a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning</b>" and I could see neither evidence nor reasoning in what Ms Cash spouted.<br /><br />Not that I'm averse to the word 'inference' being used to take the place of 'implication' or 'insinuation', I'm just a bit lost as to which word we might in future be able to use for any genuine examples of a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning.
