Is Larry Pickering too much of a left-leaning pinko for them?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462488453822156883.post-73556131383731380632017-03-10T13:17:57.043+11:002017-03-10T13:17:57.043+11:00The campaign waged by the Murdoch press has been g...The campaign waged by the Murdoch press has been going on for what seems like an eternity. Yet it is difficult to glean exactly what it is that they want. Something about "free speech" when we know that speech is not entire free; there are restrictions.

So they want to replace "offend", "insult" and "humiliate" with words such as "harass" or "vilify". What would such a change actually achieve? Just a lot of legal squabbling?

But they do not want that. They want the law to apply an "objective" test instead of a "subjective" one. How that is to be determined is not exactly made clear.

One solution, apparently, is to consult with reasonable members of the community: the "pub test". Good luck with that.

As Barnaby Joyce has said, no one he talks to wants to talk with him about 18C. He claims no one really knows what it is.

But the Murdoch press fears that people might be embroiled in a legal dispute for expressing an opinion. And of course we must ask: "Which opinion?"

They keep giving as examples Bolt and Leak. We know why Bolt lost the argument, and Leak was saved by 18D.

I would like to ask Leak: "So what is the name of that boy?"

I am sure he would not be able to answer, because the cartoon was not about a particular boy, or even a small group of boys; it was about Aboriginal parents and their children. And it embraced all Aboriginal parents and children. There is a name for that kind all-embracing opinion.
