In which the pond finds the energy to do the dance with Josh, the onion muncher, petulant Peta and the oscillating fan ...

Moving quickly along - the sight of a lover spurned always distresses the pond - it seems an eternity since the onion muncher bobbed up on the front page of the lizard Oz, either the digital or tree killer edition - perhaps as much as an astonishing 24 hours.

It's the business of the reptiles to keep him front and centre as a stick with which to beat Malware and to remind the wets of all the many virtues of dinkum clean Oz coal as a solution to any passing energy problem … oi, oi, oi …

Of course that makes it the business of the pond too, and so without shame or remorse, the pond intends to revive some recent outings …

First came petulant Peta, and a good chance to see the MAMIL in action ...

Sure it's as stale as mouldy bread caught out in Sydney humidity, but it's better than nothing. Brush off the mould, slip it in the toaster, and away you go ...

Sure enough, Albo and Sukkar and the whole damn thing set the oscillating fan off ...

On and on he went, taking umbrage at Team Onion Muncher ...

A band of reactionaries? Oh come now, that's a bit hard. What's wrong with old-fashioned endearing talk of dinosaurs being mulched down to make coal in future centuries, or luddites ...

Poor old Josh, there he was imagining he was devising a national approach to energy policy, a move that seemed to have completely zoomed over the head of the lobbyists who can call the lizard Oz their home ...

Oh there was much FUD in the air, to match the steam rising from the featured mighty Loy Yang brown coal-fired thermal power station … dinkum clean brown coal, oi, oi, oi … why we had a national energy policy and then they ruined it ...

Oh those terrible, dreadful renewables, but be still thumping heart, because our Adam had found someone to back him ...

Now admittedly the look seems like the sort of thing if you were auditioning for a part in a revival of The Sopranos, or perhaps a gig as a lawyer to the Donald's lawyer …but what splendid news that John Barilario had gone the full nuke and didn't mind giving the fridge a blast ...

Wednesday night for the speechifying slipped to our Adam as a tip?

Why that's tonight, but sadly the pond will probably skip it and watch Mad as Hell … the pond hadn't imagined there was anyone about that might make Josh seem like a decent sort of struggler, but John Barilaro channeling our Adam is certainly that man …

But please, keep the pond in the shallow water before it gets too deeply into Josh.

Better perhaps to get into yesterday's relevant Pope, with more relevant Pope here … (The Canberra Times really does need to upgrade the gallery it uses here).

  1. Msn, John really drank the glow-in-the-dark kool-aid on his jaunt, didn't he?

Small modular reactor most likely from the US? The American SMR closest to being switched on is the NuScale, which will not power a single light globe before 2026 (and given how these things go, probably not before 2030, which means we couldn't get one here before say 2035. Even then, the producers are talking about US $90 per MWh ($115 Australian). And that price will only go up (and, China to a brick, it does not include disposal/decommissioning costs).

Wind and solar cost as little as ~$50 Australian per MWh, or $75 if you count the additional costs of managing a variable supply.

That Tamyr-class nuclear powered icebreaker has sailed, John.

    1. I note that Portugal managed to power itself entirely by 'renewables' in March without a nuclear in sight:

Mind you, Portugal has less than half of Australia's population (10.3 million) and is only 1.2% the size of Australia (92,212 sq km versus 7,692,000 sq km) and the largest city, Lisbon, has only just over half a million people, but still it's an achievement.

    2. And now even the Poms have managed a coal-free 24 hours (but they do have nukes):
