Vanity, all is vanity, and then there's the screeching major Order of Lenin hunter Mitchell ...

The pond usually likes to start the week, heck the day, with a reading from the bible.

Vanity of vanities, all is vanity, is an old favourite ...

But why bother, when on Monday former head reptile and now preening feather duster in the cupboard of life, screeching major Order of Lenin hunter Mitchell makes the preacher sound like She's shouting into the wind ...

Yes, it's desperate, pathetic stuff, a man living in the past and still conducting old wars and riven by old rivalries, as if any of it mattered any more ...

It's around this point that the pond should have been playing one of its favourite childhood games ...

But why bother with a game when we can have actual, real life reptile hubris, pride and vanity?

What a steaming pile of self-congratulatory horseshit.

The pond had to pinch itself to check that it could emerge from this reptile dreaming and discover what the real business plan was ...

Luckily, over at The Monthly, there was struggling, embittered Eric Beecher summing up the reptile situation ...

Over at the Australian, which loses an estimated $20–30 million annually, there is another kind of business model. Under the KRM (Keith Rupert Murdoch) model (like the Kerry Packer model before it, which used to sustain the Bulletin) the proprietor cross-subsidises loss-making newspapers like the Australian, the Times of London and the New York Post with the hefty profits from News Corp’s other businesses. This strategy underpins Rupert Murdoch’s political and social power in three countries, and also buys time in case a new financially sustainable business model for journalism does emerge.

So short on sense was the major Mitchell, and so long on vanity and rose-coloured spectacles, that the pond felt the need to bolster the read with more talk of hubris ...

Yes, the reptiles are in a tizz this sitting day ...

The pond loves it when the reptiles deliver a firm "must" ...

"Must" hasn't got anything to do with it ...

The pond might just as well say the reptiles must shut up ...

Let the cat herding begin and good luck to all the cat herders ...

And so to the award of the day, because it's become a tradition at the pond to order up a fresh Order of Lenin medal for the Order of Lenin hunter each week, for the major Mitchell's sterling contributions to blather.

Truth to tell, the pond is running short of medals. There are only so many OOLs that can be handed out, so this week the pond is embarking on further research ...

By golly that last one in the shape of a star looks tasty.

If the Order of Lenin hunter keeps up this sort of quality work, he could well end up looking like a hero of the Murdochian empire ...

And speaking of Vlad the impaler and Murdoch and the whole damn thing, please no protests about the major Mitchell being showered with medals he didn't earn and so doesn't deserve.

As any Putin lover knows, it's the right of everybody to get a medal for their sacrifices ...

  1. This Maj Mitch comment appealed:
    "Many former Fairfax editors believe the mastheads will lose their voice in national affairs if reduced to web-only news Monday to Friday."

    So what he's saying is that the ABC which has web-only news Monday to Sunday, has hardly any voice in national affairs. After all, nobody watches ABC tv do they ? They're much too busy watching the Bolter and Hadley replays on Fox.

    But as to the past and future, DP, whilst myself being a fan of Ecclesiastes (who could surpass "The race is not to the swift ...), I also go for this:

    The line it is drawn
    The curse it is cast
    The slow one now
    Will later be fast
    As the present now
    Will later be past
    The order is
    Rapidly fadin'
    And the first one now
    Will later be last
    For the times they are a-changin'.

    Oh yes, Mr Zimmerman had his days.

  2. Do you think it may be a disorder?
    Certain people who have been given the means to 'inform' us all are obsessed with the following topics:
    * the 'non-existence' of climate change,
    * evil lefties,
    * the ABC,
    * Fairfax

    I should have put 'evil lefties' at the top of the list because anyone who does not agree with our media's spruikers of wisdom, is one. Lefties are to blame for everything. Global warming is a construct to bring down democracy and capitalism. The ABC and Fairfax are propaganda outfits for leftist concerns. According to such folk Malcolm Turnbull is a leftie as is anyone who is not beguiled by Tony Abbott.

    Observing life in a goldfish bowl must shrink cognition.

    Speaking of which, I have taken to listening to Andrew Bolt and Steve Price tossing around goldfish matters on the wireless each evening. So funny. I am reminded of that exquisitely inane conversation between Tony Hancock and Hugh Lloyd in the Blood Donor.

    1. You said it, Miss pp.

      "We", at one stage, did think it might be narcissistic delusional personality disorder, and personally I'm still inclined to that view.

      But if somebody perchance has a fresh copy of DSM V and can confirm this amateur, albeit well informed, diagnosis, that would be appreciated

    2. GB, my reading of a fact sheeet ( 2 pages, http://www.dsm5.org/Documents/Personality%20Disorders%20Fact%20Sheet.pdf ) at American Psychiatric Association - DSM-5 Development is that, if competent, your diagnosis based on DSM-4 should substantially hold with what is to be found in Section 2 of DSM-5 despite the changes.

      Amazon has the paperback DSM-5 available from USD20.99 used, and USD22.68 new ( https://www.amazon.com/Diagnostic-Statistical-Manual-Mental-Disorders/dp/0890425558 )

      Numerous university libraries have it free online, that is, if you're able to access them. If not able then a google suggests a search that turns up with numerous dsm v online free pdf sources. One of those topping the list (30MB, 970pages) is this:

      Diagnostic Criteria 301.81 (F60.81)
      Narcissistic Personality Disorder, page 669:

      A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack
      of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated
      by five (or more) of the following:
      1. Has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents,
      expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements).
      2. Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal
      love.
      3. Believes that he or she is “special” and unique and can only be understood by, or
      should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions).
      4. Requires excessive admiration.
      5. Has a sense of entitlement (i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable
      treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations).
      6. Is interpersonally exploitative (i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own
      ends).
      7. Lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others.
      8. Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her.
      9. Shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes...

    4. Section III
      Emerging Measures and Models Assessment Measures...Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders.

      Narcissistic Personaiity Disorder, page 767:

      Typical features of narcissistic personality disorder are variable and vulnerable self-esteem,
      with attempts at regulation through attention and approval seeking, and either overt or
      covert grandiosity. Characteristic difficulties are apparent in identity, self-direction, empathy,
      and/or intimacy, as described below, along with specific maladaptive traits in the
      domain of Antagonism.

      Proposed Diagnostic Criteria

      A. Moderate or greater impairment in personality functioning, manifested by characteristic
      difficulties in two or more of the following four areas:
      1. Identity: Excessive reference to others for self-definition and self-esteem regulation;
      exaggerated self-appraisal inflated or deflated, or vacillating between extremes;
      emotional regulation mirrors fluctuations in self-esteem.
      2. Self-direction: Goal setting based on gaining approval from others; personal standards
      unreasonably high in order to see oneself as exceptional, or too low based
      on a sense of entitlement; often unaware of own motivations.
      3. Empathy: Impaired ability to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of
      others; excessively attuned to reactions of others, but only if perceived as relevant
      to self; over- or underestimate of own effect on others.
      4. Intimacy: Relationships largely superficial and exist to serve self-esteem regulation;
      mutuality constrained by little genuine interest in others’ experiences and predominance
      of a need for personal gain.

      B. Both of the following pathological personality traits:
      1. Grandiosity (an aspect of Antagonism); Feelings of entitlement, either overt or covert;
      self-centeredness; firmly holding to the belief that one is better than others;
      condescension toward others.
      2. Attention seeking (an aspect of Antagonism): Excessive attempts to attract and
      be the focus of the attention of others; admiration seeking...

      Gotta be "Bingo!!"

    5. Yes but so what. Personality disorders are not treatable and anyway as I understand it, a diagnosis is only to be made if the person themself has a problem with their behaviour. It's not good enough reason ethically to diagnose someone because their behavior is a problem for others. Unless the behavior is actually dangerous to the person or others, then they can be sectioned.
      The law is the only way to stop them. They lie or they are incompetent and should be held to account.

    6. Thanks for the effort of looking up and posting all that Anony #1. It really does appear to be a complete "Bingo!!", doesn't it. Also good to know that there isn't all that much difference between DSM IVR and DSM V, as I don't have any particular inclination to acquire DSM V, paperback or otherwise.

      However, Anony #2, personality disorders are eminently treatable by, for instance, prefrontal lobotomy. Also, repeated shock therapy has been known to disrupt various 'disorders'.

      But are you saying that Oreo and Mitchell and Kenny and Bolt et al aren't serious public menaces in need of treatment ? Aren't you aware of what happened the last time a lot of big lies were told repeatedly to destabilize the people ?

      Ooops, is that a Godwin jar offense ?

      Delete
    7. Jeez gruebleen you don't read too well do you?
      I wrote that they are untreatable. So far.
      Joking about anything is alright with me if you aren't a bigot and you are not.
      I can diagnose that.
      So yeah a lobotomy would seem to be a fair and just treatment it is not consistent with the values of the psychological community.
      Shock treatment does work with some people suffering depression that doesn't respond to other treatments.
      There is some evidence that tms or transmagnetic stimulation which is less invasive than shock therapy might be effective.

      There was an RN program about it last week.

      But the lying reptiles and the others you mention should be charged with something. They are criminally insane or stupid.
      Godwin jars? They went out when the evil left stopped Tony bringing us freedom and saving civilization by repealing 18c.

  3. If News and it's acolytes reckon that something is a bad idea, chances are it's a reasonable proposition.

    You'd think that they'd be only too happy to take up the "slack" if Fairfax chooses daily digital.

    Perhaps the thought of printing (millions, lol) more newspapers to scatter around airports and anywhere else that requires a medium to wipe the dog shit off your shoes is a financial bridge too far?

    Perhaps the obvious answer is the correct one. They are clueless.

  4. As happens so often when I see something from the Oz, I found myself wondering "Who actually wants to read this shit?" Okay, I'm sure that Rupert loves it, and the other reptiles guzzle it down with the Kool-Aid, but is there really a section of the general public that eagerly follows Major Mitchell's ongoing screeching over Fairfax's business plan? Maybe there is - it's a sick, sick world - but it would have to be a pretty small group. No wonder they have to resort to massive corporate giveaways to maintain barely-credible circulation figures.
