Trust Angela Shanahan and Fred Nile and Cory and Erica and the Hansonites? Has anyone got a British Paints' lid handy so we can re-enact Rolf's "sure thing" ...

No, you goose, your dead are mouldering in the ground, like everyone else, except those who get cremated and have their ashes sit in an urn on the mantelpiece.

It's a pity that it's haram because otherwise a cat might come along and piss on the ashes ...

Instead the worms will just have to do their work, while the delusions also rest in the ground.

But enough of theological pleasantries this day, and in view of recent events in France, the pond sought refuge in the traditional views of a rabid member of the Oz commentariat, where theological jihadists of the fundamentalist Islamic and Christian kind can share and cultivate their homophobia together ...

Come on down, angel of the Shanahans, and save the pond from weightier matters ...

Yes, that'll do nicely.

And so on with the holy word ...

Now there's an excellent thrust. Note how the angel speaks for all people, gay and straight, and assures them all that no one worries about same-sex marriage.

It's the breadth of empathy from the get go that was sure to beguile the pond, the situational awareness. What's that you say? Gay people aren't really people, or if they are, they're "you people" and should stop their "you people" mindless agitation ...

Actually the pond's research, a humble poll admittedly, suggested that nine out of ten people thought the Shanahans wrote drivel for the lizard Oz.

But enough of the pond's objective scientific research techniques, because we have to admire the way "It is an obvious ploy to quash the thing" seems only to be emanating from the Billistas ...

But a quick and cursory read of the headlines would suggest the devil is already out of the bottle and stomping around on the ratbag right, with Erica naturally showing the way ...

Delay, obfuscate, hand wring, confuse and call on Tony, and if he's not to hand, there's always a Cory willing to set the pace...

Yes, because your average fundamentalist homophobic jihadist will always patiently explain that people's rights can easily be dismissed as a fringe, trendy issue ... (and more of Cory and working links here).

And speaking of barking mad fundamentalists, there's also the Hansonites ...

Oh yes, there's a lot more mischief to come, and according to election promises made, that mischief was certain to come before the end of the year.

Still, election promises are only made so they can be broken, and in all the excitement of the headlines, the pond plumb forgot that the sweet reptilian angel was still rabbiting on about how all was peace and light and good (keep on saying it's good, or you might end up in the corn field).

Which is of course code for the sensible middle needing to abandon all sense and sensibility, and end up in extremist bigot and homophobe la la land, like your average sensible fundamentalist Catholic or sensitive fundamentalist Islamic or Greek Orthodox forgetting about Lesbos and homosexuality contributing to military morale...

Now some might wonder how Safe Schools got tangled up with the notion of gay marriage, but it's all one in the homophobic discourse.

There were a few words in that reptile story on the Hansonites that help explain why this is just the beginning of the ugliness ...

Well yes, more on that flyer in Mandarin at Buzzfeed here, done in support of Fred Nile's party, and as sure as ugliness follows Nile everywhere - so much hate, so little time - there'll be more dirty tricks to follow ...

Meanwhile, it's back to the nicety of those afterlife theological questions ...

    1. Oops indeed, but now what a dilemma. If the pond were to change the header to 'sure can', no one would know the pond's faulty channeling of the Rolf, accurate enough in spirit but not in words. On balance then the pond must live with the enduring shame so that the comment can be seen as a clarion call for checking faulty memory ...

  2. I notice that Erica is described as "A vocal supporter of traditional marriage". Funny, I didn't think that anyone was proposing to outlaw traditional heterosexual marriage.... Still, I suppose it sounds better than "hysterical foe of equal rights for same sex couples".

BTW, that cornfield reference was a nice nod to the Jerome Bixby story / "Twilight Zone" episode "It's a _Good_ Life", DP. I wonder what dear old Rod Serling (gone these 41 years this month) would have made of the Ericas, Angelas and the Trumps of the modern era? He generally didn't have much regard for bigots and fanatics....

    1. The pond has been going through the old Twilight Zone eps, which are now impossibly quaint and aged, but still liberated many great sci fi memes. Where would the Simpsons Halloween eps be without Rod?

My 6yo grandson would be horrified.
